ARMED FORCES DAY CELEBRATION

Thanks to all who attended our Armed Forces Day Celebration at Two-Way Fish Camp on Saturday, May 21.  We had an excellent speaker, CDR Bryan McGrath, USN (Ret.), on the vital role naval power plays in meeting the foreign policy challenges faced by the United States in the 21st Century.  We were also honored to present, on behalf of the Golden Isles Council, a check for $2,000 to representatives of the Warrior Transition Unit at Fort Stewart for the benefit of service personnel who have been wounded in our current wars.  This money represents the proceeds from last year’s visit by the Liberty Belle.

THE MAKING OF A MARINE

On Friday, March 11, members of the Golden Isles Council of the Navy League enjoyed a tour of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, South Carolina.  Also represented on the trip were Marine Corps League Glynco Detachment 716, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4092, and the general community.  During our day on Parris Island we visited the Marine Corps Museum, the rifle range, a recruit squad bay, and were shown the rappel tower, confidence course, and other sites of interest.  Best of all, however, was watching the men and women of Companies L and O, respectively, graduate from recruit training as United States Marines.  Thanks to Brigadier General Padilla, CG of the Recruit Depot, and to Corporal Lamberth, our excellent tour guide, for a great visit.
